Sabalgarh Fort and Maharaja Gopal Singh of Karauli (1724 A.D to 1757 A.D.)---
Sabalgarh fort of immense historical importance is situated on a large hill on the right or south bank of the river Chambal , in the northeastern part of Sabalgarh, which may have also contributed to the city's name.Located some 70 KM away from Morena city . Presently, the fortress is in ruins and is infamous for stories of hauntings and ghosts. The fort consists of a defensive structure and one main palaces and many other buildings. The fort has been controlled by a number of different rulers in its history.
This strong fort of Sabalgarh was built by Maharaja Gopal Singh , a Jadon chief of Karauli. He succeeded Karauli Gaddi in 1724 A. D.He was an ambitious ,brave ,and successful chief .Due to great reputation and wisdom of his ministers , Khandi Rai and Nawal Singh ,the neighbouring states , Shopur and Narwar ,were for a time administered under their inspiration . The Raja was a child when he came to the "Gaddi ", but the ministers had an understanding with the Marhtta leaders ,then the terror of the whole country and they made no attempt to seize Karauli during the chief's minority .Gopal Singh carried his arms beyond Sabalgarh to the hill of Sikarwari ,five Kos from Gwalior  ,so  Beside Sabalgarh they had jurisdiction over Bijaipur and Jora also. This family continued to hold the Sabal garh region till the  1757A.D( or the time of Maharaja Tursan Pal .)
The Sikarwar thakur of Nipri  in Sabalgarh pargana ,south of the Chambal ,rebelled against Tursan Pal and seized the fort.On the Karauli Raja Tursan Pal forces coming against them under a Pathan in the Raj Service ,so bloody was the fight that the stream of the Kuwari close to Nipri was colored red.The darwar was victorious ,and smote the Sikarwars as far as Pahargarh three kos from Nipri , and thenceforth they were Tursan Pals obedient subjects .No others ventured to oppose their chief after this example.
There was a constant rebellion in the time of Maharaja Manak Pal (1772 A.D to 1804 A.D.),and struggles with external foes besides.Rorji Sindhia invaded the state ;he reached Rampur ,one kos west from Karauli ,where he was met by the Darwars forces. In the fight which ensued Rorji Sindhiya was killed and his people fled. His "chatri "is in the "Bandaran's Bagh "by the road between Rampur and Karauli .
In 1795 ,Marathas forces under Lakhwa Dada attacked Sabalgarh , after a stubborn struggle , they reduced the strong fort of Sabalgarh to submission and there after they attacked Bijaipur south of Sabalgarh and it was also captured and placed in charge of Amboji Ingale. In 1806 A.D. Daulat Rao Sindhiya imprisoned Ambaji and demanded Sabalgarh from him but he refused .In 1809 A.D. Daulat Rao Sindhiya and his  French general Jean Baptiste occupied the Sabalgarh fort and they also succeeded in taking together with all the Jadon territory on the right bank of Chambal. The best efforts of the raja's eldest son , Amolak Pal ,were unavailing to recover it.

Sabalgarh Fort is built in the Rajasthani style. It has three main gates, and many temples are located within the fort, such as Jagannath Temple. Other historical buildings in the fort include Naval Singh Haveli and the Royal Court (Kacheri). The complex is a fine example of eighteenth century fort planning. It was surrounded by an outer fortification wall on the north and the west side. A continuous fortification wall of 1,800 meters in length can be seen on the north side along the state highway, while some small sections of fortifications are seen along the east side. The east and west sides have the dense forest as a natural defence. There are also remains of a moat along the southern side. The Chambal River on the north and the nalla at the foothills on the west made the location of the fort more favorable. The inner fortification wall is strengthened with 12 bastions and has five gateways. The gateway on the north seems to be the main entrance into the fort, and serves as a connection between the outer and the inner settlement. The inner fort had palaces, residences for the generals and elite (Nawal Singh Haveli), and other ancillary buildings like stables, kacheri (court), and temples, while the rest of the settlement was between the two fortification walls. The settlement had several wells for water and were located both in the inner and outer fortification.
